BMW has announced the introduction of the BMW Personal Pilot L3, a Level 3 highly automated driving function, in its new 7 Series models, excluding specific versions. Set to revolutionize driving, this feature allows drivers to divert their attention from the road, handling tasks such as speed control, distance monitoring, and lane positioning. Priced at 6,000 euros, this groundbreaking technology will be available exclusively in Germany from December, with installations beginning in March.

The Level 3 capability, defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), enables drivers to engage in other activities inside the vehicle at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph) on motorways with separated carriageways, even in the dark. This is made possible by advanced sensors, marking a first in the industry.

The introduction of Level 3 functionality places BMW at the forefront of automotive innovation, being the first to offer both advanced Level 2 and Level 3 driving systems. The BMW Highway Assistant, available in the new BMW 5 Series, already provides a Level 2 function, which includes unique features like the Active Lane Change Assistant with eye confirmation, allowing drivers a more relaxed posture at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph).

A key difference between Levels 2 and 3 is the responsibility shift. In Level 2, the driver must always be ready to take control, a requirement monitored by an attentiveness camera. In contrast, Level 3 allows for engagement in secondary activities like editing emails or streaming videos while on the move, up to 60 km/h.

Activation and deactivation of the BMW Personal Pilot L3 are controlled by a button on the steering wheel. The system requires drivers to be prepared to resume control when needed, signaled by visual and acoustic alerts. If unresponsive, the vehicle safely comes to a stop.

The system’s accuracy and safety are ensured through a live HD map aligned with GPS, 360° sensors, a new software stack, a powerful computing platform, and a 5G connection to the BMW Cloud. The vehicle is also equipped with ultrasonic, radar sensors, and a highly sensitive 3D lidar sensor for comprehensive environmental monitoring.

This suite of technologies ensures reliable operation even in dark conditions, setting BMW apart in the realm of automated driving. The BMW Personal Pilot L3, which enhances both comfort and safety, is contingent on BMW Connected Drive services valid for two years.
